Presenter:
R. Paul Gustafson

Sponsor: Three Rivers AHEC

Session Description: Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men in the United States after non-melanoma skin cancer, and is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Because of widespread screening efforts, the majority of newly diagnosed prostate cancers are found early when they are still confined to the prostate gland, thus the number of prostate cancer-related deaths has decreased. This presentation is about one man's journey from a routine physical exam to prostate cancer diagnosis, through treatment and to life after treatment. The story of how he was introduced to a cutting-edge treatment method is one that should be told to every man facing prostate cancer.

Session Objectives:
Session participants will be able to:
  1. Describe how a prostate cancer patient was diagnosed.
  2. List at least three options for prostate cancer treatment.
  3. List three advantages of being treated with proton beam therapy.
  4. Discuss how physicians respond when a patient selects proton beam therapy.
