Session Description: Numerous soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan often present signs of traumatic brain injury and/or post traumatic stress disorder. This presentation will address some of the similarities between these diagnoses along with the frequency and treatment implications from a mental health viewpoint. Mental health treatment strategies along with resources available will be discussed in future sessions.
Session Objectives:
Session participants will:
- Differentiate between the symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder).
- Identify the increase in mild TBI and PTSD in soldiers returning from the Iraq/ Afghanistan conflicts.
- Describe the typical war time experiences of today's soldier.
- Identify/discuss recent research on PTSD and hypothesis to explain differences among patients.
Technology Requirements:
Participants registering for programs should have access to the following technology for best viewing and participation:
- Personal computer with Macintosh or Windows with 512 MB of RAM
- Broadband internet connection such as an office LAN, DSL, or cable modem
- Phone next to personal computer (or speaker phone if multiple people are viewing)
- Computer speakers (built-in or attached)

Continuing Education Information:
Three Rivers AHEC is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Georgia Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
