Program Description
The goal of the Next Generation Telemedicine Webinars is to foster higher acceptance among health care providers through presentations from practitioners who have proven that telemedicine is useful by successfully integrating clinical telemedicine services into their practices. Each presentation includes the personal experience and pathway taken to telemedicine adoption as well as the hurdles and challenges associated with implementation. Patient cases and outcomes are presented along with lessons learned along the way. Presenters include both rural and urban providers of telehealth services.
Patients in rural settings face unique needs and challenges their urban counterparts do not share when it comes to recruiting and retaining health care providers. Because rural communities face specific challenges regarding access to health care providers, they historically have suffered health disparities compared to urban communities.
Telehealth allows an opportunity to "level the playing field." It enables patients and providers to leverage existing technology to improve rural health outcomes. Although challenges exist, telehealth continues to expand and offer new services as technology advances.
The potential of telehealth to a rural community:
-Improved access to specialty and primary care
-Increased patient satisfaction with care
-Improved clinical outcomes resulting in a healthier community
-Reduction in emergency room utilization
-Positive economic impact: cost savings and dollars stay local
Learning Objectives
At the end of the presentation, attendees should:
- Describe the challenges of rural communities regarding access to health care providers and the resulting health disparities faced by these communities.
- Detail the potential benefits gained by rural providers & communities who implement telehealth services.
- Interact with a telehealth provider of specialty care who is the Medical Director of a Pediatric Medical Center that has successfully launched a robust telehealth program that is improving access to care to underserved children across the state.
