The dramatic increase in the non-English speaking population has created a need for interpreters in medical settings. Health care interpreters facilitate communication between patients who do not speak English and their physicians, nurses, lab technicians and other healthcare providers. Learn the do's and don'ts of interpreting and how the process works.
At the conclusion of the this program, participants should be able to:
- Describe language access rights and the value of using competent interpreters to increase patient satisfaction and safety.
- Recognize the human and financial risks of working with untrained and ad hoc interpreters.
- Define the roles and expectations for professional interpreters.
- Demonstrate common interpreting errors and specify techniques to help avoid them.
- Examine the role of culture in the interpretation process.

Participants registering for programs should have access to the following technology for best viewing and participation:
- Personal computer with Macintosh or Windows with 512 MB of RAM
- Broadband internet connection such as an office LAN, DSL, or cable modem
- Phone next to personal computer (or speaker phone if multiple people are viewing)
- Computer speakers (built-in or attached)
